“This is a major victory for religious liberty,” said Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council. “The state should not discriminate against churches and other religious non-profits because they won’t abandon their Biblical beliefs. Newsom’s officials tried to illegally stop this church from showing the love of Jesus to poor immigrant families. Fortunately, the Constitution protects people of faith against government overreach like this.” Attorneys for the Church of Compassion and its Dayspring Christian Learning Center were represented by the National Center for Law and Policy (NCLP), Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) and Advocates for Faith and Freedom (AFF). They filed a lawsuit and motion for preliminary injunction against the Biden administration and California state officials last year, challenging the suspension of the church’s preschool from a federal food program due to their beliefs about human sexuality. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which oversees the Child and Adult Food Care Program nationally, provides funding to states including California. After the Biden administration expanded the definition of “sex” in Title IX to encompass sexual orientation and gender identity, California’s Department of Social Services (CDSS) implemented new mandates. But these new rules restricted religious organizations from participation in the food program if their orthodox Biblical views on human sexuality affected the way they operated their church or ministry. The preschool was abruptly removed from the Food Program on December 29, 2022, when the CDSS mistakenly thought it could enforce compliance with the sexual orientation and gender identity “non-discrimination” provisions against religious institutions. The CDSS insisted that both the church and the preschool revise all their policies and practices to conform with this new directive, not merely their food services. In an attempt to discipline the preschool, the CDSS added the school to the National Disqualified List, effectively blocking their access to government funding. Nonetheless, the church remained resolute and did not yield to the state’s demands. The sweeping CDSS mandates would have required the church and preschool overhaul their hiring policies, restroom regulations, dress codes, and pronoun use to align with the government’s updated definitions. Despite warnings from the National Center for Law & Policy (NCLP) that such actions were a clear violation of the US Constitution’s First Amendment, the CDSS moved forward with the withdrawal of Food Program funds from the preschool. “Ironically, in the name of combatting discrimination, government officials have excluded the church and preschool from serving the El Cajon community based solely on their religious beliefs and exercise,” said ADF Senior Counsel Jeremiah Galus. “This is antithetical to the First Amendment’s promise of religious freedom and only hurts needy families and children.” The federal civil rights lawsuit and motion for preliminary injunction asserted violations of religious freedom, speech, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the federal Administrative Procedures Act. Federal law protects religious organizations from discrimination based on their beliefs and hiring practices. Attorney General Rob Bonta’s staff wisely, quickly waved the white flag of surrender deciding to settle the case before the court even had an opportunity to rule on the motion for preliminary injunction. The settlement reinstated Dayspring in the Food Program, reimbursed suspended funds, removed the preschool from the National Disqualified List, and required the CDSS to issue clear guidance regarding the existence of exemptions for religious institutions in California’s food programs. The CDSS also agreed to pay $160,000 in legal fees. This outcome is a significant win for religious freedom in California and sets a precedent for similar religious institutions. “California must never be permitted to prioritize its extreme sexual ideological aims over the needs of hungry children,” said Constitutional attorney Dean Broyles, chief counsel of the NCLP. “It is profoundly unethical and immoral that California officials so flagrantly ignored their oath to uphold the US Constitution and deliberately decided to hold hungry children hostage to their draconian desire to coercively control the religious beliefs, observances and practices of a Christian church and its religious preschool.” “We had a fantastic legal team, but God gets all the glory for this victory,” Broyles continued. “We are glad that we decided to bring in our friends at ADF as co-counsel because of their recent similar win against the USDA in Florida. Any government efforts to commandeer places of worship and religious institutions should be met with firm opposition, as they did in this case,” Burt said. Students will still celebrate two Muslim holidays along with Gay Pride and Black History Month.
The school district voted to remove both holidays from the school calendar. It’s yet another example of the wokeness that has infected our public schools. I write about this in my upcoming book, “Twilight’s Last Gleaming: Can America Be Saved?” The local ABC affiliate said Columbus Day has become a divisive issue given the role of Christopher Columbus in colonizing the New World. One middle school in the district actually held a workshop titled, “Columbus: Hero or Villain?” Local Republicans called the decision disappointing and shocking. Others called it an insult to those who served in the military. “One word: DISGUSTING to describe Stamford Connecticut,” one angry resident said. “The very backwards, ignorant and obvious communist school board has CANCELLED both Columbus day and Veterans day. The reason? They needed more school days for teaching. WHAT????” Another wrote, “the leftist town in Stamford Connecticut wants to eliminate Columbus Day and Veterans Day from the school calendar. This shows enormous disrespect to Italians and Veterans. These people are just like The Taliban, tearing down statues and erasing our History.” This is a spit in the face and even worse, to our Veterans. SO appalling on so many levels. Stamford CT should be ashamed. Students will still celebrate two Muslim holidays along with Gay Pride and Black History Month. But apparently school leaders don’t believe there should be a holiday set aside to honor the men and women who wear the uniform of this great nation. Wake up, America. Kennedy Sanders talked about her 24-year-old daughter. “Kennedy was very outgoing, very athletic, very competitive,” she recalled. “All of these different things that she had plans for that, you know, were just cut short in the blink of an eye. So, you know, I just feel like somebody like her that’s so full of life it’s just unfair that she’ll never get to realize those dreams that she had.” Sanders’ plans had included a homecoming to her Georgia home in June. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a Sunni nationalist group backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack. Iran has denied any link to the drone strike that also wounded more than 30 US soldiers. National Security Spokesman John Kirby briefed the press after the attack. “We do not seek another war,” he stated. “We do not seek to escalate, but we will absolutely do what is required to protect ourselves, to continue that mission and to respond appropriately to these attacks.” The attack drone reportedly slipped through US defenses because it was confused with a US drone returning to base. Kirby asserted …Biden will respond in a time and manner of a commander-in-chief. “We’ll also do it fully cognizant of the fact that these groups, backed by Tehran, have just taken the lives of American troops. And I think I’ll leave it there, ” he said. Some Middle East analysts believe US enemies in the region are sensing weakness, and any response from Washington must be as big as the US rhetoric. Bradley Bowman from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies noted, “Full points in the administration for wanting to avoid a regional war. But we’re doing classic mirror imaging here, where we think our adversaries think like we do. They do not. When they hear proportionality, reasonable, moderate, we don’t want a regional war. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the UNRWA scandal. “It is imperative that UNWRA immediately—as it said it would investigate—that it hold people accountable as necessary and that it review its procedures,” Blinken demanded. Adi Schwartz, co-author of the book, The War of Return, says he believes the current investigation may follow a pattern previously implemented by the UN. “Yes, there were a few bad apples (they said). We will get rid of them, but please, give us back the money and we can all go back to normal. I think this will be a terrible mistake. I think (by) the international community and Israel and by anyone who wants to see peace for Israelis and Palestinians, because UNRWA is a detrimental factor in the conflict,” Schwartz argued. Hamas rejected a proposal Monday for the release of the hostages they hold. In a statement, Hamas demanded, “Israel must cease its aggression and withdraw from Gaza before any exchange transaction takes place.” Earlier reports had suggested the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Israel were close to a deal involving the release of the hostages in phases, a pause in the fighting, and the release of Israeli-held Palestinian prisoners. The carbon tax, framed as a way to reduce carbon emissions, has already cost Canadians hundreds more annually despite rebates.
On January 23, the Budget Office acknowledged that a five percent federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the carbon tax will cost Canadians $486 million despite repeated claims by Liberals that the carbon tax is “revenue neutral.” According to the Legislative Costing Note, if the GST was removed, it “would reduce federal GST revenues by $486 million in 2024 increasing to $1 billion in 2031.” Furthermore, GST charges are expected to cost each provinces millions this year, with Ontario paying the most at $182 million followed by Alberta at $96 million, Québec at $77 million, British Columbia at $58 million, Saskatchewan at $29 million, Manitoba at $18 million, Nova Scotia at $10 million, New Brunswick at $7 million, Newfoundland and Labrador at $6 million, and Prince Edward Island at $1 million. The startling numbers come as the Liberal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has repeatedly claimed no revenue is earned on the carbon tax. “Our price on pollution is revenue neutral,” Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland told the House of Commons in 2022. “All the money goes back to Canadian families.” “It is very important to note this is revenue neutral,” she repeated in the House of Commons finance committee in 2022. “The money is returned directly to Canadian families.” Similarly, in December, Liberal MP Kody Blois told the House of Commons that the carbon tax was “revenue neutral.” In 2019, now-Attorney General Arif Virani told Members of Parliament, “The plan is an entirely revenue neutral plan. It is not a tax.” Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre condemned the $486 million carbon tax revenue on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, “Trudeau’s tax on a tax: he charges GST on the carbon tax.
