Looming Threats

A storm of historic proportions is approaching the Caribbean and the East Coast of the United States. Hurricane Irma was birthed off the west coast of Africa and has been generating increasing intensity at levels not normally seen. It is estimated Irma could make landfall as a Category 5 storm. Irma is estimated to produce sustained winds of 180 miles per hour. Only three storms of this magnitude have struck the United States in the last century. Irma is still days away from landfall and it is already producing winds of 130 mph. (Photo: Garris Elkins and his wife, Jan/via ElijahList.com)

The name Irma is of German derivation. It has been translated to mean War Goddess. In the natural, Irma could create additional havoc of yet another natural disaster in the United States following Hurricane Harvey. Harvey produced a weather war of sorts bringing death and destruction.

A similar threat of war is being voiced regarding the nuclear threat posed by North Korea. We do not have to assume death and destruction will be the outcome of these two deadly scenarios. In prayer, we can confront these deadly possibilities and release a new reality.

After I wrote the book, Prayers from the Throne of God, the book was given as a gift to the missionaries in a worldwide missions agency. Several months later, I received an email from one of the missionaries who told me that she and a group of missionaries had just read the book. They gathered to pray and released declarations, decrees and prophetic words against an incoming hurricane bearing down on the eastern coast of Central America. She was amazed at what took place. As they prayed, the hurricane made a hard ninety-degree turn and went back out to sea and dissipated. No one was harmed. The missionary wrote to me and said when the hurricane changed its course so dramatically, [she] and her friends realized how powerful prayers uttered from Heaven’s throne can be when released against an imposing threat.

Our Place of Authority

You and I are seated in this very moment at the right hand of the Father in Christ. This is not a futuristic place. It is our now reality—it is as real as you reading the words on this page at this very moment. Paul described this profound position in his letter to the Ephesians. “For He raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6).

It is from this place of authority in Christ that we have the ability to pray from Heaven to earth and expect supernatural outcomes. As dual citizens living in two realms and possessing the positional authority given to us in Christ, we can alter the affairs of earth with our prayers—including the weather and the threat of war.

This kind of prayer consists of three elements:

• Declaring the Heart of God

When we declare the heart of God we are declaring His love over the people affected by war, disease and natural disaster. God does not bring harm and death to anyone. He is the God of resurrection life and freedom. Because we know God’s heart, we no longer have to assume that evil will carry the day. God has good intentions for all of humanity and He wants us to declare those good intentions over every tribe and nation.

• Decreeing the Victory of Christ

When we decree the victory of Christ, we are issuing a Spirit-empowered statement that no weapon of evil formed against us will prosper. The Cross and the resurrection sealed the fate of darkness once and for all time. It is from that victory that our decrees are formed. We have been given the assignment to decree different outcomes on earth based on the authority gained by Christ and released through the Church in believing prayer.

• Prophesying the Word of the Lord

When the Church begins to declare God’s heart and decree the victory of Jesus Christ, the Spirit will release new and previously unheard revelation for us to speak into the situation for which we are contending in prayer. These prophetic words become like rudders steering potentially harmful situations away from us, causing them to line up with God’s will.

Decree Victory Over Developing Storms!

As Irma builds in intensity and as international tensions increase regarding North Korea, do not sit back and allow these events to unfold as though you have no influence. Stand up and declare the heart of God for the Caribbean, the East Coast of the United States, and the situation in North Korea.

Decree the victory of Christ against these developing storms. Open your heart up to hear a fresh word of prophecy from the Spirit and speak that word in faith, believing that it can accomplish infinitely more than you could ask or think. This is a time for the world to see a supernatural turnaround. That turnaround is ours to announce!
