movie "The Avengers". It's a story about how a bunch of
very talented but equally egotistical individuals are
able to lay their egos aside for a season so they can
combine their many talents to defeat their nemesis, the
dark under-lord Loki.
Loki is able to win people over to the dark side by
touching their hearts. By touching their hearts, he is
able to control their minds as well. He does so early in
the movie to a character named Hawkeye. Once touched,
Loki uses his control over Hawkeye's mind to force
Hawkeye to serve the purposes of darkness. Hawkeye
remains under Loki's control and does his bidding until
an Avenger named Black Widow comes and she is able to
break the power of darkness over Hawkeye's mind.
Once free, what does Hawkeye do with his new found
freedom? Does he shake his deliverer's hand in gratitude
then go his own way and live as he pleases? That was
unthinkable to Hawkeye. He knows the debt due his
Avenger and repays his deliverer by becoming an Avenger
himself, fighting along-side the Avenger who set him free
for the purpose of rescuing other people from Loki's
The similarities between Hawkeye and the person who
receives Jesus as Savior should be clear. Man lived in
harmony with God in the Garden till 1 day when the
Prince of Darkness, guized as a Serpent, came and lured
the first couple after him by enticing their passions.
When Adam sinned, all he possessed and all that were his
(his offspring) fell under the influence of sin and
darkness. Jeremiah the Prophet said of fallen man's
heart; "the heart is deceitfully wicked and beyond cure,
who can know it?" man's heart was once pure but when
Satan touched his heart with temptation and man yielded,
his heart became evil.
Praise God, the story doesn't end there. God saw man's
plight and sent His son to be our Avenger. As our
Avenger, Jesus sets us free from the power of darkness
and sin. Colossians 1:13 says "For He has rescued us
from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the
kingdom of the son he loves."
Here unfortunately, is where truth and fiction differ.
In the movie, the grateful Hawkeye repays his Savior's
loyalty and becomes an Avenger, fighting alongside other
Avengers against the forces of evil. In real life, the
average Christian who is saved from darkness by Avenger
Jesus feels no such compulsion or obligation. We simply
accept the freedom Jesus won for us and live our lives as
we please, as long as we go to church on Sunday.
Consequently, the battle against the forces of darkness is
left in the hands of an anointed few.
The church has been underachieving for centuries and has
been losing ground to the forces of darkness. The main
reason for out set-backs is because the church doesn't
know her power or her purpose. God didn't call us to be
a good people who go to church on Sunday and hope to get
to Heaven 1 day. Jesus saved us so we would co-labor
with him in bringing His Kingdom to the earth. He gave
us Super-powers, the Holy Spirit, to empower us to
accomplish the mission He called us to.
It's our Avenger's desire and plan that once we are free
from the power of darkness, that out of appreciation for
what our Avenger has done for us,we would become Avengers
ourselves and fight this battle against darkness along-
side Jesus. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we then
free other people from the Devil's influence.
If you know Jesus as Savior and have been filled with the
Spirit, you have all you need to be an Avenger. Should
we take this incredible power and privilege and just go
our own way? Do our own thing? What a waste of Super
Powers! Or will you be like Hawkeye and out of
appreciation, fight alongside our Avenger, Jesus,
Yet there are some who received this power but still
needlessly fear what darkness may do to them. Loki tried
to capture the Iron Man in the same manner as he was able
to capture Hawkeye - by touching his heart. Iron Man has
an advantage that Loki doesn't know about, his heart has
already been changed. His new heart is even central to
his abilities and power as the Iron Man. The only way
Iron Man could serve Loki is if he willed to.
When we accept Jesus, we are given new hearts. Speaking
of a future people God reserved for himself, God said "I
will put a new Spirit in them; I will remove from them
their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh."
(Ezekiel 11:19). Our hearts are not only central to our
abilities as God's Avengers but our new hearts are
impervious to the deceitful attacks of the Devil as well.
The only way we could serve the evil one is if we willed
God could save the world from evil all by himself, but
call God crazy, His will is to do it through and with the
cooperation of the Spirit-empowered church. He gave us
new hearts and power to accomplish the mission. Let's
join our Avenger, Jesus, in removing darkness from the
earth and let us instead fight to establish the Kingdom
of Christ in it's place.
to him who overcomes, i will give the right to eat from the tree of life. Rv.2:7. Bro. Ron
