MARIETTA, GA - 80 year-old Earl Paulk has been given 10 years' probation and fined $1000 after pleading guilty to felony perjury.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed by ex-church soloist Mona Brewer, who accused the archbishop of coercing her into a sexual relationship and of other improprieties. Paulk admitted the relationship, but claimed she seduced him. He denied other sexual relationships outside marriage.
The perjury charge resulted when a DNA test proved the archbishop fathered a child by his sister-in-law. Brewer gave CNN this explanation of how Paulk justified his behavior:
"Because he said, ‘you know, the adultery issue was for the little ones.’ It was for the -- the people, the, you know, commoners. It wasn't for people who God elevated and trusted with special things like this, relationships like this. And that's the way he explained it to me."
Paulk founded Chapel Hill Harvester Church in 1960. At one time membership exceeded 10 thousand, but it has since dwindled. The archbishop's son/nephew, D. E. "Donnie Earl" Paulk is currently senior pastor of the church, which has been renamed The Cathedral at Chapel Hill.
